How big is the Sun?

The Sun is the Center of the solar system. It also happens to be the biggest object in the solar system so all the planets in the solar system orbit around it. They follow what is called the heliocentric orbit.

I recently read on a website that the Sun occupies almost 98% of the total volume of the objects in the Solar System. This seemed pretty far-fetched so I decided to do some number crunching to verify this claim.

Alright. So, I searched around and found this exhaustive list of all the rounded objects in the Solar system and this list of almost all the major objects in the Solar System.  This includes all the planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids and satellites and the Sun, of course.

In these calculations I have taken into account only the 50 biggest objects in the Solar System as quite frankly, the objects smaller than these really don’t count for much. Also, most of these objects have been proven to be in Hydrostatic Equilibrium. This means that they are very nearly spherical.

Here are my calculations.

Volume of a Sphere =  4/3*pi*R^3  Where , R = Radius of the object.

So, ready for the results?

The Sum of the volume of 50 largest objects in the Solar System excluding the Sun’s Volume is an amazing 2.58367E+15 Km^3 !!

The Sun’s volume is 1.41227E+18 Km^3!!!

I definitely think you already know the outcome. The Sun wins!

To be precise, the Volume of those 50 objects is just 0.182945062% and the Sun occupies a gargantuan percentage of 99.81705494 % of the Volume in the Solar System!

This is definitive proof that the Sun does occupy more than 98% of the Solar Systems volume!
